Black Grouse at the lek

Added by Jakob Damborg 29-04-2009

”It´s twilight and the morning fog is covering Skövde Skjutfält, a grassland in south Sweden. Suddenly the silence is broking by basking wings shortly followed by a bobbling sound just interrupted by small explosive screams – the Black Grouse has arrived at the lek!”

My family and I spent this eastern holiday at Lake Hornborga, famous for its dancing cranes, which this year numbered more than 18.000.While the cranes were impressive it were the Black Grouse at a nearby military area that took the prize.

I had erected my hide just at the edge of the lek – the gathering site of the males – and I had amazing views of up to twenty males. They were acting and playing in the near vicinity of the hide. Sometimes they were too close to focus!

They arrived at 5 AM and left at 8 AM. In between the bluish morning fog slowly gave away for the golden rays of the sun to the delight of the photographer.
